After two years of uncertainty and isolation, the 2022 St Albans Lunar New Year Festival marked a powerful return to in-person celebrations - and what a day it was.
Held in the heart of Alfrieda Street, the festival drew tens of thousands of attendees, all eager to reconnect with the community, celebrate the Year of the Tiger, and embrace the colour, flavour, and energy of St Albans.
This was more than a festival - it was a reunion. Families, friends, and neighbours came together once again to experience the joy of lion dances, street food, live performances, and traditional ceremonies.
After pivoting to a fully digital format in 2021, 2022 marked the first time the festival returned to the streets since the global pandemic - and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The excitement and emotional significance of the day were captured in a feature article by the Sydney Morning Herald.
“a salve for community on a hot day.” as described by the Sydney Morning Herald
Local MP Daniel Mulino also acknowledged the importance of the celebration, sharing the day's importance with a heartfelt message about community resilience and the vibrancy of the west.
